The Parable of the Talents – Gospel Reflection by Pete Mathison

Lately I have meditated often on the familiar Bible passage about the Talents. The man given 5 silver coins returned 10 to his Master, the man given 2 returned 4 and the man given one buried them and therefore produced nothing more claiming he new the master was shrewd and he did not want to lose his masters silver coins. Therefore the man with 5 was given more, as was the man with 2 but the man who did nothing was thrown into the fiery pit as he wasted the Talents that were given him.

For years I never took the time to truly understand this passage until recently. God is the MASTER and the Talents or silver coins are the gifts, abilities, capabilities, strengths that he has given me, and each one of us. He expects that we will use these Talents for His glory over and over and over again.  It is really a beautiful thing to fully know that we all have God given talents, that He specifically gave us, based upon our own individuality and what he wanted and knows that we can do if we want to.

If we are perfectly honest, I think way too many of us are using our talents for our own selfish gain and not producing a gain for our Father in Heaven.  If we simply open our eyes and ears and heart to this parable we can easily answer our Lord just like the three men did in this parable.  Are you using your talents to Honor our Father, to spread His Gospel and share with others His unending love, mercy and kindness that He has for each and every one of us?

If you are great!  Keep doing it.  If you are not, get started now!  We all have been given talents from God to serve God!  If you wonder what yours are sit down for 10 minutes a day in quiet, with Jesus for 21 straight days, and simply say, “Hear I am Lord, I come to do your will”.  He spoke to me in this exact way and if you take just 10 minutes per day in complete quiet, I am certain He will speak to you also.  “Hear I am Lord I come to do your will”.

God Bless us All.
