The Fish Fry Fanatic

The Fish Fry Fanatic features a different local fish fry in the Cedar Rapids area. Fish Fries are a great way to enjoy the fellowship of your community.

Solon, IA. This Friday the FFF traveled to the Solon American Legion fish fry. Why? Because his wife said so. As it turns out even fanatics have to listen to their wives! By 6:15 the bar and hall was packed serving 242 dinners for the evening, a big night here. The vintage main street brick building is adjacent to the town’s hardware store. The windows are filled in with opaque glass blocks to let in light but not views. There’s a big semi-circle shaped bar as you walk in that serves up $2 frosty mugs of beer or $2.50 craft beers for the local yuppies. Several folding tables are set up on the old gymnasium wood dance floor to accommodate the crowd of diners.

Shrimp will be served March 21 and April 18

You pay at the stage area and a line forms into the back kitchen and out the second door to get your fish dinner. On the menu tonight is fried pollock, party potatoes, corn, slaw, bread, dessert and beverage. All you can eat for just $9. Later they ran out of fish and started serving fried shrimp with cocktail sauce. The American Legion serves shrimp on alternating Friday nights during Lent. Both the fish and shrimp were very good and cooked to perfection.

There is a 50/50 raffle with two chances for a buck. Performing live tonight was a singing sister act starring Jennel and Joan. Their show featured a lively style of country, gospel and yodeling.  They played to large and appreciative audience, many of which got up to dance to the music.
